Midair Collison in US Capital Deadliest in 25 Years

At 8:47 PM EST on 29 January 2025, a US Army Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines jet on approach to Ronald Reagan International Airport in Washington, DC.  The aircraft exploded and fell into the Potomac River, with no survivors among the 60 passengers and 4 crew of the jet or the three soldiers aboard the helicopter, making this the deadliest airplane crash in the US in a quarter century.  Among the dead were 14 athletes in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, as well as parents and coaches, returning from a developmental camp in Wichita, Kansas, following the competition.  Several Russian skaters and coaches were also onboard.

The day was dominated by a conjunction of the Sun with asteroid Icarus at 10 Aquarius, named for the mythic figure who flew too close to the sun on waxen wings, which melted, sending him plummeting to his death in the sea.  The eerie parallel to this fireball created when these two aircraft flew too close together and fell into a body of water is obvious, but Icarus also relates to rash, reckless actions, which may have been a factor in this tragedy, the cause of which is as yet undetermined.

As well, the Sun/Icarus pairing rests on the fulcrum of a T-Square, an astrological pattern created when two points in opposition (180 degrees) to each other are both in square (90 degrees) to a third point.  In this case, the descriptive polarity involves asteroid Kansas at 13 Scorpio, representing the jetliner’s origin, and asteroid Washingtonia at 14 Taurus, representing its destination.  Also with Washingtonia is asteroid Olympiada at 7 Taurus, named for the Olympic games, with multiple victims either Olympic hopefuls or prior medalists, now coaching.

The overarching theme of the period was the station of Uranus, which fell at 23 Taurus on the following day (stations are points at which, from our Earthly perspective, celestial bodies appear to slow, come to a standstill, and reverse direction).  Uranus rules air flight, accidents, and shocking or unexpected events, and its position at this crucial turning point in its cycle emphasizes its impact on the timeframe in general.  A square to asteroid Atropos at 28 Leo, named for the mythic Greek Fate who severs the thread of life at death, adds a component of mortality to the station.

Another harbinger of the disaster can be seen in a second T-Square, formed from the opposition of asteroid Jett, phonetic match for “jet,” which at 27 Aries was closely opposing asteroid Nemesis at 28 Libra, a point noted for bringing ruin and destruction.  The celestial body on the fulcrum is Mars at 21 Cancer, ruling athletes, competitions, and violent death.
