Which houses answer a job question
Horary astrology casts a chart for the moment a question is asked and reads it with the rules of traditional astrology. For a job, two houses matter most. The 1st house is you, the querent, and the planet that rules the sign on its cusp is your significator. The 10th house is career, standing and the authority above you, so the planet ruling its cusp is the job, the position or the employer who offers it. The Moon is a second significator for you in every chart. See the houses and significators sections of the guide for how rulers are found.
The 6th house is often suggested for work, but traditionally (Lilly, Frawley) it rules servants and employees, the people who work for you, so it fits an employer’s staff rather than the post you are seeking. Your pay is the 2nd house; the employer’s budget is the 11th, second from the 10th.
What counts as a yes
The question is whether your significator and the job’s significator come together. The classic signs of a yes:
- An applying aspect between the two rulers. A conjunction, sextile or trine is easy; a square or opposition gets there with friction. It must be applying, with the faster planet moving toward the slower, and it must perfect before either planet leaves its sign.
- One ruler in the other’s house. The ruler of the 10th in the 1st house, or the ruler of the 1st in the 10th, puts you and the job in the same place.
- Translation or collection of light. If the two never aspect, a third planet can act as a go-between: a swifter one, often the Moon, separates from one and applies to the other, or a heavier one receives both. In a job chart this is the recruiter or the referral who makes the introduction.
- Reception and strength. A significator that is dignified, or that welcomes the other by sign, gives the yes better terms.
- The Moon. The Moon applying to the job’s ruler, or to your own ruler, helps the matter along.
What counts as a no
- No connection. If the two rulers do not aspect and no planet carries the light, nothing joins you to the position.
- Prohibition. A third planet joins one of the significators before they perfect and goes no further, so the connection is cut off: often another candidate or a change of plan. If it carries on to the other significator before they perfect, it carries the light instead, which is the translation above.
- Refranation. One significator turns retrograde before the aspect is exact, so the matter is withdrawn at the last moment.
- Combustion. A significator close to the Sun is weakened and overshadowed.
- A void Moon. When the Moon will make no further aspect before leaving her sign, tradition says nothing will come of the matter. The Moon section explains why.
What you see and what it means
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Ruler of the 1st applies to the ruler of the 10th by conjunction, sextile or trine | The job comes to you: the cleanest yes |
| The same by square or opposition | A yes with friction: delays, hard negotiation, terms to fight for |
| No aspect between the two rulers | Nothing connects you to the position |
| The Moon carries the light between them | A go-between, such as a recruiter or a referral, brings it about |
| A third planet touches one of them first and goes no further (prohibition) | Someone or something steps in before the offer, such as another candidate |
| One significator turns retrograde before the aspect is exact (refranation) | It starts well and is pulled back at the last moment |
| The ruler of the 10th is combust | The position or the employer is under strain and may be shaky |
| The Moon is void of course | Little comes of the matter |
Timing
When the answer is yes, the same chart gives the date. The number of degrees between the two significators becomes days, weeks or months by the type of sign and house, or you can read the date the aspect becomes exact in an ephemeris. The timing section of the guide explains the rule, and the example below uses the date.
How AstroGPT reads it
AstroGPT, the app behind this site, does the same thing for your own question. It casts a chart for the moment you ask, at your phone’s location, in Western mode with Equal houses, and a language model writes the reading by the traditional rules above. The chart is kept for 60 minutes, so you can ask follow-up questions in the same chat against the same chart; after that a new chat casts a new one. The example below is a real chart and the answer AstroGPT gave for it. It is a reading for reflection and entertainment, and it can be wrong, like any astrologer’s.
