What the Moon sign shows
The Moon is the fastest body in the chart and the one closest to us, and astrologers have long linked her with the body’s rhythms, the daily round and the changing mood. Her sign at birth says how those feelings are shaped: what a person needs to feel settled, how they react before they have had time to think, and what feels like home.
Where the Sun sign describes the core of the character and the rising sign the manner shown to others, the Moon sign is read as the inner weather. Each of the twelve pages takes one sign and sets out the needs and reactions the tradition ties to it, together with the sign’s element, its ruler and the Moon’s condition there.
The Moon’s dignity by sign
A planet is stronger or weaker according to the sign it occupies. For the Moon the scheme is short. She is at home, in her domicile, in Cancer, the one sign she rules. She is exalted in Taurus. In Capricorn, the sign opposite her home, she is in her detriment, and in Scorpio, opposite her exaltation, in her fall.
In the remaining eight signs the Moon has no dignity by sign: she is neither helped nor hindered by the place, and her strength comes from other things, such as her phase, her aspects and the house she occupies. The page for each sign states which of these cases applies, so you can see at a glance whether a Moon in Leo or in Pisces is read as strong, weak or plain.
How often the Moon changes sign
The Moon completes the zodiac in a little over 27 days, which gives about two and a half days in each sign. For most birth dates, then, the Moon sign is settled by the date alone. The exception is the day she crosses from one sign into the next: on that day the hour of birth, and the birthplace’s time zone, decide which sign applies.
The Moon pages carry a table of every time she passes through the sign over the coming years, shown in UTC, or in your own time zone once the page has loaded, so you can see when the Moon is next in that sign. To find your own sign from a date, time and city, use the Moon sign calculator.
The Moon in horary
In horary astrology the Moon has a second job. Along with the ruler of the Ascendant she stands for the person asking, and she also describes the course of the matter: her last aspect shows what has just passed, her next aspect what is coming. A question asked while the Moon is in Cancer or Taurus therefore finds her well placed, and one asked with her in Scorpio or Capricorn finds her at a disadvantage. AstroGPT casts a horary chart for the moment you ask, and the Moon of that moment is part of what its reading weighs.
