Character in Jyotish
Karka is the fourth Rashi, a cardinal water sign, and the only one the Moon rules, so here she is both the graha and the sign’s lord. As the graha of the mind, she colours the whole personality; in this sign the colouring is her own.
A Kark Rashi Moon is read as a feeling, receptive and protective mind. Moods are strong and tied to memory, so that old scenes, smells and songs can bring a day’s weather with them. The placement is described as devoted to family, quick to nurture and quick to take offence, with a shell that closes when the mind feels unsafe. Attachment to home and to the past is the thread in these descriptions, and it can slide into clinging or into a mood that follows the Moon’s own changes.
The Moon is in her own sign in Karka, which is read as steady support from the sign for her natural qualities of care, receptivity and feeling. How bright she is, which bhava she holds from the Lagna and the aspects reaching her still move the picture.
Karka is a sidereal sign, counted from the stars, and the sidereal zodiac lags the tropical by about 24°. Karka sits mostly in tropical Leo, with the final six degrees of tropical Cancer at its start. For that reason a Western Leo Moon is often a Kark Rashi Moon. The tropical reading is on the Moon in Cancer page.
The sign lord
The Moon is the lord of Karka, and she rules no other Rashi. Jupiter is exalted in Karka, and Mars is debilitated there.
Normally the lord of a Moon’s Rashi is a separate graha whose condition is read alongside hers. In Karka the two are one, so the examination is of the Moon alone: her phase, since a full or waxing Moon is brighter than a dark or waning one, the bhava she occupies from the Lagna and the grahas that join or aspect her. Her own state does the work that a separate sign lord would otherwise do.
The bhava the Moon holds then says where the sensitivity of Karka is directed: the Moon in the 4th toward home and mother, in the 5th toward children and creative work, in the 10th toward public life.
Nakshatras in Kark Rashi
Three nakshatras share the sign’s nine padas, and the division is uneven.
Punarvasu contributes only its fourth pada, the first 3°20′ of Karka; the other three belong to Mithuna. Jupiter is the lord of Punarvasu, and its deity is Aditi. Pushya then occupies all four padas from 3°20′ to 16°40′, ruled by Saturn and presided over by Brihaspati. Ashlesha completes the sign from 16°40′ to 30°00′, with Mercury as lord and the Nagas as deity. Because its last pada ends exactly on the boundary, Simha opens with Magha.
The dasha sequence for a birth here therefore starts from Jupiter’s 16 years, Saturn’s 19 or Mercury’s 17.
Name letters
When a child is named in the Namakarana rite, the first syllable is read off the Moon’s pada at the time of birth. The list below follows the table that the Piyushadhara, Govinda’s commentary on the Muhurta Chintamani, quotes under naming.
Karka has nine in all. The single Punarvasu pada gives Hi. Pushya gives Hu, He, Ho and Da, and Ashlesha gives Di, Du, De and Do.
Just one syllable fits a given birth, and the Moon spends around six hours in a pada, which is why the hour of birth matters for the letter. The Moon sign calculator, when switched to Vedic, shows the nakshatra and pada for any time and place. The letter belongs to the custom of naming. It says nothing about the child’s character and promises nothing.
In Prashna
A question put to a Jyotishi is charted for the exact moment of asking. In that chart the Lagna stands for the asker, while the Moon shows how the asker’s mind is placed and which way the matter is going.
When the Moon is in Karka at that time, she is in her own sign, which can be read as a mind that is relaxed in its own element, concerned with security, home or the family, and a matter that touches the personal and the domestic. Her own bhava and aspects then show how she is supported.
In AstroGPT the chart comes from the moment you send a question, with the sidereal positions worked out for your place. If the Moon happens to be in Karka then, that is the calendar’s doing and has nothing to do with a birth. See horary astrology for how a question chart is judged.
