Physical appearance
Few signs get so lean a portrait from Lilly. When Capricorn ascends, he writes in Christian Astrology (1647), the body is usually dry and not tall. The face is long and slender, the chin narrow, the beard thin and the hair black. The neck is long and thin and the chest narrow. He then adds a caution against his own rule: he often saw white hair with Capricorn rising, yet always black hair when Capricorn fell in the seventh, and he blamed the whiteness on the family rather than the sign.
Ptolemy comes at it differently. In the Tetrabiblos the body is shaped by wherever the Ascendant, the Moon and their rulers fall, and he describes the form by quarters of the circle, not sign by sign. Capricorn opens the last quarter, which runs on through Aquarius to Pisces. Its people, in his account, are dark-skinned and of middle height, with straight hair, little hair on the body and a build of some grace, their temperament leaning to cold and moisture. Capricorn on its own appears in his list of signs that make the body smaller.
The two authors agree on small stature and dark colouring and part ways over leanness and grace. Neither is evidence about a person you meet, and many people with this rising sign will look nothing like either portrait.
Temperament and first impression
Capricorn is cardinal earth. Cardinal signs open a season, which is why the sign is read as one that sets things going, and earth is the element of what is solid, slow and measurable. So the first impression described for this Ascendant is of a person who arrives prepared. Words are chosen, promises are few and the manner is reserved, sometimes to the point of seeming cool at the start.
Patience and a long view of time are the strengths described here: the sort of person who builds a thing in stages and is later seen to have been right about the schedule. The same trait turned inward is the weakness. A reserve that protects can also keep people out, and a habit of expecting the worst in order to be ready for it can read as gloom to others.
Cancer falls on the Descendant, the opposite pole. Where the self at the centre of the chart is formal and guarded, the people it meets as partners and open opponents are pictured as warm, changeable and given to feeling.
The chart ruler
The ruler of a sign rising governs the chart in the traditional method, and Capricorn’s is Saturn. He is alone here, since no modern planet shares the sign. Saturn also rules Aquarius, so he is the chart ruler for two neighbouring risings.
His condition is the first thing to check. In Capricorn and Aquarius he is in his own domicile; in Libra he is exalted. In Cancer and Leo he is in detriment, and in Aries in his fall, placements where he is read as strained. Saturn’s house matters just as much. In the 1st house he sits on the Ascendant and tints the character directly. In the 7th he sits on the Descendant, among the people one meets. In the 10th he stands over work and public standing.
Mars is exalted in Capricorn, so a Mars placed in the rising sign is in his exaltation and is read as drive held under discipline, an edge of energy beside Saturn’s stern reputation.
Rising sign vs Sun sign
Your Sun sign comes from the date of birth and your rising sign from the hour, so Capricorn rising can appear under any Sun sign. With the Sun in Capricorn too you were born near sunrise, and the two point the same way. With the Sun elsewhere, the Sun is read as what a person is for and the Ascendant as the face that person shows first.
So a warm Sun sign with Capricorn rising can look cooler than it feels: others meet the reserve first and learn the rest later. The emotional layer of the same sign is described on the Moon in Capricorn page.
Capricorn is a short-ascension sign in the northern hemisphere, but only by a little. The card above shows just under two hours at New York and London and slightly over two at Mumbai and the equator. A birth time rounded to the half hour can still shift the Ascendant into Sagittarius or Aquarius, so anyone born near either edge of Capricorn should try times on both sides.
In horary: the Ascendant is you
In horary the chart belongs to the minute of the question, and its Ascendant no longer describes a temperament. It stands for the person asking, the querent, and the planet that rules it becomes that person’s main significator. If Capricorn is rising when the question is put, Saturn plays that part, and the verdict turns on how he meets the ruler of the house that governs the matter. The sign can colour the question too: a Capricorn Ascendant can describe a querent asking about work, standing or a plan with a long horizon.
The AstroGPT app works this way. It sets up a chart for the minute you ask, and the sign on the eastern horizon then speaks for you in that one question. The sky of the question has nothing to do with the sky of your birth.
With Capricorn rising, the Moon, as ruler of Cancer, is the natural symbol of the other party, the partner or rival, and she also serves as a general guide to how the matter unfolds. The horary astrology guide walks through a full example, and the rising sign calculator shows the sign that was rising when you were born.
