What this retrograde is
On 24 October 2026 at 07:15 UTC Mercury stations retrograde at 20°58′ Scorpio. Seen from the Earth it then appears to move backwards through the sign for just over twenty days, and on 13 November 2026 at 15:52 UTC it stations direct at 5°02′ Scorpio. Both stations lie inside Scorpio, so the whole retrograde belongs to one sign and, in whole-sign houses, to one house of each chart. All times here are UTC; in your own time zone the date of a station can differ by a day.
Mercury has no dignity by sign in Scorpio. The sign is ruled by Mars, and Mercury is neither at home, exalted, in detriment nor in fall there. Retrograde motion is a separate matter: William Lilly lists it among a planet’s accidental debilities, together with combustion, and the tradition treats a retrograde planet as one whose business turns back on itself rather than moving straight ahead.
The middle of the retrograde is also Mercury’s conjunction with the Sun. Mercury is conjunct the Sun in longitude on 4 November 2026 at 14:25 UTC, at 12°10′ Scorpio, and about 22′ from the Sun’s centre, just outside the 17′ of cazimi measured from the body of the Sun. Those who reckon in longitude only call it cazimi; either way the days around it are combust, which in longitude means within 8°30′ of the Sun, from about 31 October to about 8 November.
The shadow
The retrograde is only the middle of a longer stretch. Mercury’s pre-shadow starts on 4 October 2026 at 09:10 UTC, when it first reaches 5°02′ Scorpio, the degree at which it will turn direct. From there it moves forward to 20°58′ Scorpio, stops, goes back to 5°02′ Scorpio, stops again, and then moves forward over the same ground a third time. The post-shadow ends on 30 November 2026 at 06:16 UTC, when Mercury is back at 20°58′ Scorpio, the degree where it first turned.
That makes about 57 days from the first crossing of the stretch to the last. Astrologers who work with shadows count all of it as the period in which matters of Mercury are slow to settle. The 16° of Scorpio between the two stations is covered three times: forward, backward and forward again. The stretch of the sign is small; the number of times Mercury passes over it is what the idea of the shadow rests on.
Reading it by rising sign
The twelve sections below use whole-sign houses: the rising sign is the whole 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on around the zodiac. Mercury is in Scorpio throughout, so for each rising sign the house it moves through is the one Scorpio occupies. Mercury also rules Gemini and Virgo, and the houses those signs occupy are the matters it carries with it, wherever it stands.
The house meanings are the traditional ones, after William Lilly’s Christian Astrology, with some later additions. Reading a transiting planet by whole-sign house from the rising sign is the practice of later astrologers, not of Lilly, and what follows is how those astrologers read it. Find your rising sign with the rising sign calculator, which needs a birth time. One placement is a small part of a chart: the rest of the birth chart, and the other planets, matter more than a single retrograde.
Aries rising
For Aries rising Mercury goes retrograde through the 8th house. The tradition gives that house to death, legacies, the goods of the dead and money that belongs to other people, such as debts, shared accounts and what a partner brings in. The planet of letters and accounts turning back over what others are owed or owe is how astrologers read it.
Mercury is also lord of the 3rd house (Gemini) and the 6th (Virgo) for this rising sign. The 3rd covers brothers and sisters, neighbours, short journeys, news and letters; the 6th covers illness, servants, employees and small animals. Astrologers read a retrograde lord as a reason to return to those matters: a message sent again, a worker rehired, a routine revisited, a health question reopened.
In the 8th house, the tradition reads loose ends in shared finances and inherited affairs, second looks at paperwork about money held jointly, and old arrangements with colleagues that need revising. Which shared obligations deserve a second reading is the question for this rising sign.
Taurus rising
Taurus rising has Mercury retrograde in the 7th house, which the tradition assigns to marriage, partners, open enemies and lawsuits, and in general to the other person in any dealing. The planet that governs speech and agreements goes backwards exactly where agreements with others live, so the tradition looks here for talks reopened, contracts reread and partners who come back with a changed mind.
For Taurus rising, Mercury rules the 2nd house (Gemini), meaning money, possessions and what one earns, and the 5th (Virgo), meaning children, pleasure and entertainment. Here the retrograde touches accounts, prices and earnings on one side, and on the other a pastime, a project or a matter concerning a child that is taken up a second time.
Astrologers check how Mercury is placed by sign and aspect in the birth chart, since the retrograde only adds to what is already there. The tradition reads partnerships and money as the two areas where a second look is worth taking while Mercury is retrograde, and where a decision made in haste is the likelier to be reopened.
Gemini rising
Gemini rising is one of the two rising signs for which Mercury is the chart ruler, the planet that stands for the person, and this retrograde sits in the 6th house: sickness, servants, tenants and small animals. A chart ruler turning backwards through the house of daily work and health is read as routines, employees and bodily upkeep coming back to the person’s attention.
Mercury rules the 1st house (Gemini) and the 4th (Virgo) here. Ruling the 1st ties the retrograde to the body, the temperament and how the native presents; ruling the 4th brings in the home, the father, land and the end of matters. The tradition reads such a ruler as the person turning inward, reviewing before moving on, rather than forging ahead.
Mercury moves here through a house it does not rule, since Scorpio is the 6th and its own signs are the 1st and 4th, in a sign where it has no dignity by sign, and the Sun passes it on 4 November 2026. Astrologers read that as a time for reviewing habits and health matters rather than starting new ones, and for sorting out arrangements at home before changing them.
Cancer rising
With Cancer rising, Mercury retrogrades through the 5th house, the house of children, pleasure, entertainment and messengers. Going back over this ground is the tradition’s way of describing hobbies picked up again, an old pleasure revisited, and news about a child that needs a second hearing.
The two signs Mercury rules sit far apart for Cancer rising: Gemini is the 12th house, a house of difficulty, and Virgo is the 3rd, an ordinary one of daily contact. The 12th is the house of hidden enemies, confinement, sorrow and large animals; the 3rd is for siblings, neighbours, short travel and correspondence. Private worries and everyday correspondence are the matters astrologers read as turning back.
A ruler of the 12th moving backwards through the 5th is read as a hidden matter surfacing in a social or pleasurable setting. It is a mixed placement, and it tells less than the rest of the chart does. Letters and old secrets are the two things the tradition points a Cancer-rising reader back to.
Leo rising
Leo rising has Mercury retrograde in the 4th house, which the tradition assigns to the father, lands, houses, inheritance and the end of every matter. A planet of movement and talk going back through the house of the home points to domestic arrangements revisited: repairs, a move reconsidered, property papers read once more, a conversation with a parent continued.
Mercury is lord of two houses for Leo: Virgo is the 2nd house, which covers money, goods and earnings, and Gemini is the 11th, which covers friends, patrons, hopes and wishes. Money spent on the home, and a friend or patron bound up in a domestic matter, are what astrologers watch for.
Because the 4th is also the end of things, a traditional reading pairs this retrograde with the way a long-running affair is concluding. The chart gives no verdict on its own; it shows where Mercury’s attention goes. The tradition reads property, family business and an agreement with a friend about money as the areas to go over before anything is signed.
Virgo rising
Virgo rising is the second sign for which Mercury is chart ruler, and the retrograde passes through the 3rd house: brothers and sisters, kindred, neighbours, short journeys, letters and rumours. A ruler travelling backwards in the house of letters and short trips suggests messages crossed, a trip rebooked, a relative contacted again.
Mercury rules the 1st house (Virgo) and the 10th (Gemini) for this rising sign. The 1st concerns the person and the body; the 10th is the house of the career, honour, reputation and the mother. With the ruler of both the self and the profession going back, astrologers read work reputation and personal direction as being reviewed from the inside.
As chart ruler, Mercury’s own condition in the birth chart (sign, house and aspects) is what astrologers weigh first. Virgo is, separately, the one sign where Mercury is both at home and exalted. The reading, in the end, is of review and correction: a draft redone, an answer to a colleague repeated, a plan about one’s calling reconsidered, with the letters of the 3rd house keeping it busy.
Libra rising
For Libra rising the retrograde falls in the 2nd house, which the tradition gives to money, movable goods and one’s means of living. Accounts reconciled, a purchase returned or reconsidered, and income talks reopened with those who owe or pay are the readings that belong to this house.
Mercury also rules the 9th house (Gemini) and the 12th (Virgo). The 9th is the house of long journeys, religion, learning, books and dreams; the 12th is hidden enemies, confinement, secrets and large animals. Money is therefore tied, in this reading, to travel plans and studies on one side and to anything kept out of sight on the other. A visa, a course or a booking whose cost is being reconsidered would fit the pattern.
The Mercury retrograde alone does not decide whether finances go well. What it does show, across the twenty days of the retrograde, is the 2nd house gone back over, with the far-off matters of the 9th and the quiet ones of the 12th feeding into it.
Scorpio rising
Scorpio rising has Mercury retrograde in the 1st house itself, over the Ascendant’s sign, and so on the person: the body, the manner, the way the native meets the world. In the tradition a planet in the 1st house colours the whole figure, and a retrograde one makes the native look back, hesitate or reconsider their own course.
Mercury rules the 8th house (Gemini) and the 11th (Virgo). The 8th is the house of death, legacies and other people’s money; the 11th is friends, allies and the hopes one holds for the future. Debt, inheritance and friendships are tied closely to the self here, which is why astrologers say they are taken personally.
The tradition reads Mercury in the 1st house during a retrograde as speech, writing and decisions that come out less cleanly than usual in these weeks. Spacing out a decision about money held with others, and testing a friend’s promise before relying on it, are the cautions that go with that reading.
Sagittarius rising
Sagittarius rising has Mercury retrograde in the 12th house: hidden enemies, confinement, secret sorrows, large animals and the things done in private. The 12th is counted among the unfortunate houses, which is why the tradition ties it to what stays unseen. A planet of messages turning backward there is read as a secret returning, or a worry turned over without being told to anyone.
Mercury is lord of the 7th (Gemini) and 10th (Virgo) houses for this rising sign. The 7th covers partners, marriage, open enemies and lawsuits; the 10th covers the career, honour and the mother. Partnerships and public standing both pass through the 12th during the retrograde, which is read as negotiations done behind the scenes and a work question handled quietly.
The tradition reads this as private preparation rather than public moves, and as a chance to go back over what was left unsaid with a partner or a superior. Astrologers read it as a placement where little is announced until the shadow has passed on 30 November 2026.
Capricorn rising
Capricorn rising has Mercury retrograde in the 11th house, assigned to friends, acquaintances, patrons and the hopes and wishes a person holds. Old friends who reappear, plans agreed with a group that need revising, and hopes that are reviewed rather than dropped are what the tradition looks for.
The signs Mercury rules fall in the 6th house (Gemini) and the 9th (Virgo). The 6th is illness, servants and small animals; the 9th is long journeys, religion, learning and books. Work routines and health, and studies or journeys that need a second plan, are the matters carried back. Astrologers read a friend as someone who may come up in a medical or working matter, or bring news from a far-off place.
The 11th house is counted a fortunate one, which is why astrologers read a retrograde there as a delay to what is hoped for, more than a loss of it. In the weeks around Mercury’s conjunction with the Sun on 4 November 2026, the tradition reads a friend’s advice, or a decision taken by a group, as worth testing twice.
Aquarius rising
Aquarius rising has Mercury retrograde in the 10th house, which the tradition gives to the career, honour, standing, authority and the mother. The messenger planet moving backwards through the most public house of the chart is read as a reputation under review, a job or a promotion discussed again, and a superior who changes course.
Mercury rules the 5th house (Gemini) and the 8th (Virgo) here. The 5th is children, pleasure and entertainment; the 8th is death, inheritance and money shared with others. Standing in the career house, the retrograde links the profession to children or amusements on one side, and to shared funds, taxes or other people’s money on the other.
Astrologers following this reading favour care with matters of standing while Mercury is retrograde, and revision of anything written about one’s position. New campaigns, on that view, are better held until the shadow is over on 30 November.
Pisces rising
For Pisces rising the retrograde moves through the 9th house, which the tradition gives to long journeys, religion, learning, books and dreams. Study resumed, an overseas plan reconsidered, a belief or an opinion revised, and a long-distance contact picked up again are the readings astrologers attach to Mercury going backward here.
Mercury rules the 4th house (Gemini) and the 7th (Virgo) for this rising sign. The 4th concerns the home, the father, land and the end of things; the 7th concerns marriage, partners and open enemies. Standing in the house of far-off matters, the retrograde links a move or a trip with the home and with a partner. The tradition reads a decision about where to live, taken together with someone, as one that may be revisited.
Astrologers also take it as a prompt to check the terms of a long arrangement, such as a lease, a course or a journey, before the shadow ends. The reading names the houses, not what happens in them.
In horary
In a horary chart, cast for the moment a question is asked, a retrograde planet is read for what it signifies about the matter. When the significator of the thing asked about is retrograde, the tradition reads a matter that goes back, is revised, is delayed or is done again, or a person who returns. Lilly counts retrograde among a planet’s debilities, and astrologers who follow him read a person signified by a retrograde planet as someone who may return, change their mind or not yet have decided.
That is the same logic as the sections above, only applied to the chart of the question rather than to a birth chart. Mercury’s retrograde does not stop anyone from asking. It matters when Mercury is the significator, or is a planet the question depends on, and the astrologer looks at what else the chart says before judging. A question about a return, a repair, a correction or a reply may fit this pattern well.
AstroGPT casts the chart for the moment a question is asked and then reads it. It does not use your birth chart, your rising sign or the transits of the day; Mercury’s retrograde appears in a reading only if Mercury is a significator in that chart. To see how a horary chart is read, start with the horary guide.
