Character
Purva Phalguni is the eleventh nakshatra, running from 13°20′ to 26°40′ of Simha. It stands in the centre of that sign and lies completely inside it, so the Rashi of a Moon in Purva Phalguni is never in question. Simha is the Sun’s sign, in which the Moon is neither exalted, own nor debilitated, and the nakshatra within it is Venus’s, so a Moon here is placed between the Sun’s authority and Venus’s appetite for pleasure.
That meeting gives the nakshatra its reading. A Moon in Purva Phalguni is described as warm, sociable and generous, drawn to company, beauty, music and the enjoyment of a good moment. The mind is read as expressive and affectionate, wanting to be liked and wanting those around it to share in what it enjoys. Rest and recreation matter here as much as effort does.
There is a more demanding side. Purva Phalguni is ugra, fierce, and the combination of strong feeling with an appetite for ease can be read as impulsiveness, a taste for indulgence or a readiness to feel slighted when affection is not returned. A Moon here may be easy to move, and slow to hold a course once the pleasure of a plan has worn off. The neighbouring nakshatras are Magha before it and Uttara Phalguni after.
Lord and dasha
Venus is the lord of Purva Phalguni. The Vimshottari dasha of Venus lasts 20 years, the longest of the nine. Venus also governs Bharani, nine places before Purva Phalguni, and Purva Ashadha, nine places after it.
A person whose Moon was in Purva Phalguni at birth starts in Venus’s mahadasha, whose remaining length is measured by how far the Moon had gone. At 13°20′ of Simha the whole 20 years are still ahead; near 26°40′ the period is almost over. The Sun’s dasha follows, and at 6 years it is the shortest of all.
A first mahadasha as long as Venus’s is read as a long season of attachments, friendships, taste and the pursuit of comfort, shaped by the house and condition of Venus in each chart. The sudden shift from 20 years to 6, when the Sun’s period takes over, is one of the sharper changes of tempo in the Vimshottari sequence.
Deity and symbol
The deity of Purva Phalguni is Bhaga. Varahamihira’s list in the Brihat Samhita uses the word yoni, which Iyer renders Bhaga, while the Muhurta Chintamani writes bhaga outright.
The popular symbol is the front legs of a bed, and Harness adds a hammock and a couch. The Muhurta Chintamani gives the classical shape as a couch. The imagery is read as pointing toward rest, intimacy and the comfort of a place to lie down, which makes this a nakshatra of repose and pleasure after labour.
Gana, yoni and nature
Purva Phalguni belongs to the manushya gana, the human class, which also contains Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, Uttara Phalguni, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Purva Bhadrapada and Uttara Bhadrapada.
The yoni is the rat, the pair the Muhurta Chintamani forms with Magha; Raman’s Muhurtha places Purva Phalguni as the female of the two and Magha as the male. In Ashtakoota matching the gana test carries 6 points and the yoni test 4, two of eight that are weighed together.
Purva Phalguni is ugra, fierce, a class it has in common with Bharani, Magha, Purva Ashadha and Purva Bhadrapada.
Padas and name letters
Purva Phalguni’s navamsas run from Simha, the sign of the Rashi itself, through Kanya and Tula to Vrishchika. Pada one covers 13°20′ to 16°40′ and lies in the Simha navamsa. Pada two, to 20°00′, is in Kanya. Pada three, to 23°20′, is in Tula, and pada four, to 26°40′, is in Vrishchika. Each pada measures 3°20′.
In the naming rite Purva Phalguni’s padas are matched with the syllables Mo, Ta, Ti and Tu, the first of them for a Moon between 13°20′ and 16°40′ of Simha.
In Prashna and muhurta
Say the question is about a courtship, a reunion or a celebration. A Prashna chart cast for that moment puts the asker in the Lagna and the asker’s mind and the unfolding of the affair in the Moon, and Purva Phalguni places her in Simha, the Sun’s sign. Such a Moon can be read as a mind engaged by pleasure, relationship and social life, and a matter touching comfort, affection or celebration. The ugra class can be read as adding some heat.
The Muhurta Chintamani assigns the ugra class to acts of harm, striking, setting fires, deceit, poison and weapons; the assignment concerns what a day suits in the text’s scheme of timing and gives no portrait of anyone born under it.
