Ardra nakshatra: traits, lord, deity and name letters

The sixth nakshatra, ruled by Rahu and set wholly inside Mithuna: Rudra as its deity, its teardrop, its sharp nature and the syllables of its four padas.

Ardra is the sixth of the 27 nakshatras, covering 6°40′ to 20°00′ of sidereal Mithuna (Gemini). Rahu is its lord, so a Moon in Ardra begins the Vimshottari sequence with Rahu’s 18-year dasha. The deity is Rudra, the symbol is a teardrop, and Ardra belongs to the manushya gana and the tikshna, or sharp, class.

Character

Ardra is the sixth nakshatra, the one after Mrigashira. It runs from 6°40′ to 20°00′ of Mithuna, and the whole of it lies in one Rashi, Mithun Rashi. Mercury is the lord of Mithuna. Ardra’s own lord is Rahu, so different grahas govern the sign and the nakshatra set inside it.

A Moon in Ardra at birth is read as an agitated, intense and questioning mind. The nakshatra is described as stormy: feeling arrives in gusts, and the mind goes after things with a sharpness that can be productive or can wound. It is also read as a nakshatra of weathering, of coming through disturbance with a clearer view than before. In Mithuna the Moon is neither exalted, own nor debilitated, which leaves the weight of the reading on Ardra and its lord and not on any strength from the sign.

Ardra is of the manushya gana, the human class, and its nature is tikshna, sharp. Together they make a nakshatra read as involved with human affairs at their most heated: argument, upheaval, the cutting through of a tangle.

Lord and dasha

Rahu is the lord of Ardra, and of Swati and Shatabhisha too. The Vimshottari cycle allots Rahu 18 years, the third longest of the nine periods and 15 per cent of the 120.

A Moon in Ardra therefore starts a life under Rahu’s mahadasha. The share still to run depends on the Moon’s degree in the nakshatra: close to 18 years for a birth right at 6°40′ of Mithuna, almost none for one at 20°00′. Jupiter’s 16 years take over when Rahu’s years end, and Saturn’s 19 follow after those.

Rahu rules none of the twelve Rashis, so its mahadasha is read through the sign it occupies and the bhava it stands in.

Deity and symbol

The deity of Ardra is Rudra. In the Brihat Samhita he is śūlabhṛt, the trident-bearer, a name that Iyer’s translation renders Rudra; the Muhurta Chintamani writes rudra outright. Through him the nakshatra is read as bound up with storm, destruction and the force that clears the ground.

Its symbol is a teardrop, which Harness pairs with a human head. The Muhurta Chintamani’s list of shapes gives something else, a gem, maṇi. The two pictures sit at opposite ends of the scale of feeling, one a drop of grief or relief and the other a cut jewel, hard and bright. A teardrop is read here as sorrow that follows upheaval, and the gem as the value found when the storm has passed.

Gana, yoni and nature

Ardra belongs to the manushya gana, the human class, together with Bharani, Rohini and six others.

Its yoni is the dog. The Muhurta Chintamani pairs Ardra with Mula under this animal, a pairing between the sixth nakshatra and the nineteenth. B. V. Raman’s Muhurtha makes Ardra the female dog and Mula the male.

The nature of Ardra is tikshna, sharp, as it is for Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Mula.

Padas and name letters

Ardra’s navamsa signs are the same four as Krittika’s, in the same order: Dhanu for the first pada (6°40′ to 10°00′), then Makara (to 13°20′), Kumbha (to 16°40′) and Meena (to 20°00′). Punarvasu comes next.

The kundli calculator shows the Moon’s nakshatra and pada for any birth date, time and place. Ku, Gha, Na and Chha are the four syllables of Ardra, from the first pada to the fourth, as the commentary of Govinda on the Muhurta Chintamani quotes them. Under Namakarana the pada the Moon held at birth, which changes within hours, supplies the opening sound of a name.

In Prashna and muhurta

A question put in agitation, after a shock or in the middle of a dispute, is the Prashna where a Moon in Ardra can be read as speaking for the asker’s mind: something has broken and a way through is wanted. The asker is the Lagna of the chart, and the Moon is that mind and the way the matter runs. All of Ardra lies in Mithuna, so her Rashi is the same in every pada, and the condition of Mercury, the lord of Mithuna, is read beside her.

For choosing a time, the Muhurta Chintamani gives the sharp class, to which Ardra belongs with Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Mula, the hostile rites called abhichara, blows, fierce deeds, setting people at odds and the taming of animals: the text’s inventory for the class, given here without any recommendation.

AstroGPT answers a question put in the heat of a dispute from the sidereal chart of that minute and place; the horary astrology guide is the longer account of the method.

Frequently asked questions

How often is the Moon in Ardra?
Ardra measures 13°20′, and the Moon moves through that arc in about a day. She completes the sidereal circuit in just over 27 days, so Ardra receives her 13 or 14 times a year. For the entry and exit of every visit in 2026 and 2027, see the dates table on this page, which uses the Lahiri zodiac.
What are the Ardra nakshatra name letters?
Ku, Gha, Na and Chha, from the first pada to the fourth. This is the table quoted in Govinda’s Piyushadhara commentary on the Muhurta Chintamani.
Why is the symbol of Ardra a teardrop?
Harness gives a teardrop, together with a human head, as the image of the nakshatra. The classical list of shapes in the Muhurta Chintamani calls it a gem, maṇi, a different picture, a cut stone and not a drop of water.
Which Rashi is Ardra in?
Mithuna, the sidereal Gemini, and no other. All four padas fall between 6°40′ and 20°00′ of the sign, which Mercury governs. With an ayanamsa near 24°, the arc currently lies at about 1° to 14° of tropical Cancer.
Who is the lord of Ardra?
Rahu, with a Vimshottari period of 18 years. Rahu is also the lord of Swati and Shatabhisha, nine and eighteen places after Ardra.
