Physical appearance
Scorpio rising has a reputation for a particular look, and the oldest descriptions of it are blunter than the modern ones. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), describes the person born with Scorpio ascending like this (in modern English):
“A corpulent, strong, able body; a somewhat broad or square face; a dusky, muddy complexion; dark hair, plentiful and curling; a hairy body; somewhat bow-legged and short-necked: a squat, well-knit fellow.”
Ptolemy, in Book III of the Tetrabiblos, works on a broader scale: he reads the body from the Ascendant, the Moon and their rulers together, by the quarter of the zodiac they fall in. For the quadrant from Libra to Sagittarius, he gives a sallow complexion, a spare and slender body, moderately curling hair and good eyes, with a temperament inclined to the dry and cold. He names Scorpio among the signs whose fore parts make the body slender and whose hind parts make it robust, and among those that bring some awkwardness of proportion.
The two authors do not quite agree. Lilly’s thick-set figure is hard to square with Ptolemy’s lean one, a fair reminder that both are traditional types, not observations of real people. Either way the sign is only one testimony: the condition of Mars, the Ascendant’s ruler, and any planet close to the rising degree can change the picture as much as the sign does.
Temperament and first impression
Scorpio is fixed water. Water describes a nature that responds through feeling; the fixed quality describes persistence, so feelings, once formed, stay put. On the Ascendant, the part of the chart that meets the world first, this shows as reserve. People with this sign rising are read as watching a room before they enter it and deciding slowly whom to trust.
The first impression is often of something held back. Others may find the manner cool or hard to read, then discover warmth and great loyalty once the guard comes down. Because the sign belongs to Mars, the reserve is not passive: when something matters, the approach becomes direct and hard to deflect, and pressure from outside meets resistance rather than give.
The opposite sign, Taurus, falls on the Descendant, the cusp of the 7th house of partners and open opponents. A Scorpio Ascendant thus sets a Venus-ruled sign opposite itself: the steady, unhurried qualities of Taurus are what it looks for, and sometimes runs into, in other people.
The chart ruler
The planet that rules the rising sign is the ruler of the whole chart. For Scorpio that is Mars, the same planet that rules Aries. Pluto is the modern co-ruler; most traditional practice reads the chart ruler through Mars alone, with Pluto, if used at all, as a secondary voice.
Where Mars stands colours everything: its house shows where the chart’s energy goes, its sign how it acts. A Scorpio Ascendant with Mars in the 10th leans the chart toward work and public standing; Mars in the 4th turns it toward home and family. Its essential dignity matters too. Mars is at home in Aries and Scorpio and exalted in Capricorn, where the chart ruler is read as strong and effective. In Taurus and Libra it is in detriment, and in Cancer in its fall, where the same drive has to work against the grain of its surroundings.
Rising sign vs Sun sign
The Sun sign is shared by everyone born in about the same month. The rising sign depends on the minute and place of birth, so Scorpio rising can come with a Sun in any sign. Astrologers read the Sun as the core of the character, what a person aims at, and the Ascendant as the body, the manner and the way a person enters a situation.
The difference shows most when the two disagree. Scorpio rising with the Sun in a fire or air sign often looks more guarded from outside than the person feels within. In the northern hemisphere Scorpio is a sign of long ascension, taking two and a half hours or more to rise at the latitudes of New York and London, so it covers a longer slice of each day than most signs.
The Moon adds a third layer, the emotional life; the same sign in that role is described on the Moon in Scorpio page. If you are not sure which sign was rising at your birth, the rising sign calculator works it out from your birth date, time and place.
In horary: the Ascendant is you
In a horary chart the Ascendant stops describing a temperament. The chart belongs to the moment a question is asked, and the rising sign and its ruler stand for the querent, the person asking. With Scorpio rising, Mars becomes the querent’s significator and the Moon the co-significator. The question is judged by how Mars meets the planet that rules the house of the matter, and by its condition: a dignified Mars describes someone well placed to act, a Mars in detriment or fall someone working from a weaker position. A Scorpio Ascendant can also describe a querent who is guarded about the question or has turned it over longer than they admit.
The AstroGPT app works with exactly this kind of Ascendant. Its chart is cast for the minute a chat begins and the question is put, at the asker’s location, and whichever sign is rising then, Scorpio or another, represents you in that one question; the Moon of that moment traces how the matter unfolds. The Ascendant you were born with plays no part. The horary astrology guide follows a full chart through from question to judgement.
