Vrishabh Rashi (Vrishabha): the Taurus Moon sign in Vedic astrology

The second Rashi, ruled by Venus and the sign where the Moon is exalted: how a Moon here is read, its nakshatras and its nine name syllables.

Vrishabh Rashi, Vrishabha in Sanskrit, is the second sign of the Vedic zodiac, the sidereal Taurus, spanning 30° to 60° in the Lahiri reckoning. Venus rules it, and the Moon is exalted here, also holding the sign as her moolatrikona. A Moon in Vrishabha is read as steady, sensual and slow to be moved.

Character in Jyotish

Vrishabha is the second Rashi, a fixed earth sign ruled by Venus, and for the Moon it is the sign of her exaltation. She stands for the mind in Jyotish, so the Rashi she occupies colours the temperament. The steadiness is read from the earth element and the fixed mode; the taste for comfort and beauty is read from Venus.

A Vrishabh Rashi Moon is read as calm, patient and sensual. Feelings gather slowly and, once set, hold their position. The placement is described as appreciative of good food, music, cloth and a settled household, wary of sudden changes and stubborn when pressed to move faster than it likes. Possessions and routine give the mind its footing. The weaker side is inertia: a comfortable arrangement can be kept long after it has stopped serving anyone.

The Moon is exalted in Vrishabha, and the sign is also her moolatrikona. Placed so, the Moon is read as supported by the sign itself, and her emotional nature is described as even and nourishing, with a reserve of calm in hard stretches. The rest of the chart still modifies this: whether she is waxing or waning, the bhava she holds and the aspects reaching her.

Move the tropical boundaries forward by the 24° of the Lahiri ayanamsa and Vrishabha emerges: it begins near 24° of tropical Taurus and finishes near 24° of tropical Gemini, so most of it overlaps Western Gemini. The Western view of the placement is on the Moon in Taurus page.

The sign lord

Venus is the lord of Vrishabha, and Venus rules Tula as well. Venus is exalted in Meena and debilitated in Kanya, with its moolatrikona in Tula.

Which graha stands behind a Vrishabha Moon? Venus, and three things about it are checked: the sign it occupies, the bhava it holds counted from the Lagna, and the aspects it receives. Venus in Meena or Tula is read as bringing ease and charm to the Moon, and Venus in Kanya as taking some of it away. The bhava points the comfort-seeking at a department of life: the 2nd at possessions and family, the 4th at home, the 7th at partnership.

Exaltation and rulership are separate things here. The Moon’s exaltation is a statement about her, while the lord of the Rashi stays Venus, and it is Venus that a Vrishabha Moon is judged against.

Nakshatras in Vrishabh Rashi

Krittika, Rohini and Mrigashira share the sign, and two of them are cut by its edges.

The last three padas of Krittika fill the first 10°00′ of the sign, while its first pada lies in Mesha. Krittika’s lord is the Sun and its deity is Agni. Rohini follows with all four padas from 10°00′ to 23°20′, entirely within Vrishabha, with the Moon as its lord and Prajapati as its deity. The sign finishes with the first two padas of Mrigashira, 23°20′ to 30°00′, whose lord is Mars and whose deity is Soma. Mrigashira’s last two padas continue into Mithuna.

Each starts the Vimshottari order from a different graha: the Sun’s 6 years from Krittika, the Moon’s 10 from Rohini, and Mars’s 7 from Mrigashira.

Name letters

Namakarana takes a baby’s first syllable from the pada the Moon was in at birth. The table behind this page is the one Govinda’s Piyushadhara commentary on the Muhurta Chintamani gives for naming.

Vrishabha’s nine run as follows. The last three padas of Krittika give I, U and E. Rohini’s four give O, Va, Vi and Vu, and the first two padas of Mrigashira give Ve and Vo.

Ve and Vo come from the first two padas of Mrigashira; its other two padas, Ka and Ki, belong to Mithuna, so the Moon sign calculator in its Vedic setting is the quickest way to see which side of that line a birth falls on. Name letters are part of a naming custom; they are not a description of character or a promise about it.

In Prashna

In a Prashna chart the question itself is the event that is charted. Its Lagna is the person asking, its Moon is that person’s mind and the flow of the matter, and the Rashi and nakshatra the Moon is crossing at that instant describe the matter.

When the Moon is in Vrishabha then, she stands in the sign of her exaltation and moolatrikona, which can be read as a settled, supported mind behind the question and a matter that has some substance, and Venus, the sign’s lord, shows how much comfort or friction surrounds it.

The chat in AstroGPT follows the same logic: the question and its minute are the starting data, and the sidereal sky above your location is what the answer is drawn from. For the method, read about horary astrology.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean that the Moon is exalted in Vrishabh Rashi?
Exaltation (uchcha) marks the sign where a graha is placed most favourably by sign alone, and for the Moon that sign is Vrishabha. Vrishabha is also her moolatrikona, a second mark of strength by sign. Neither point settles a chart: her phase, her bhava and the grahas that aspect her still qualify the reading.
Is Vrishabh Rashi the same as Taurus?
It shares the name and the 30° length but begins at a different place. Counted from the stars with the Lahiri ayanamsa at about 24°, Vrishabh Rashi runs from 24° of tropical Taurus to 24° of tropical Gemini. People with the Moon in Western Gemini are most often Vrishabh Rashi, while a Western Taurus Moon is more often Mesh Rashi.
Which nakshatras fall in Vrishabh Rashi?
Krittika, Rohini and Mrigashira, though not all of each. Krittika's last three padas fill the first 10°00′, Rohini takes the middle 13°20′ in full, and the first two padas of Mrigashira close the sign from 23°20′ to 30°00′.
How often is the Moon in Vrishabh Rashi?
On each pass she stays about 2½ days. Because she goes round the sidereal zodiac in a little over 27 days, she is back in Vrishabha 13 or 14 times a year. The dates on this page give the passes for 2026 and 2027 as the Lahiri zodiac reckons them.
What name letters belong to Vrishabh Rashi?
I, U, E, O, Va, Vi, Vu, Ve and Vo, one for each of the sign's nine padas. The first sound of a name follows the single pada the Moon occupied at birth, not the whole list.
