Character in Jyotish
Meena is the last of the twelve Rashis, a mutable water sign. Water makes it receptive and the mutable mode makes it adaptable, so the sign takes the shape of whatever it meets. The Moon is neither exalted, own nor debilitated in Meena.
Porousness is the main feature of the reading. A Meena Moon is described as absorbing the moods of the people nearby, as imaginative and compassionate, and as drawn to music, stories and the unseen side of life. Retreat, sleep, distant places and endings are among the subjects it is read through.
Where the sign struggles is with edges. Boundaries between its own feelings and other people’s can blur, plans can stay vague, and the mind may drift toward a dream of how things could be. A steady structure around it, in routine or in work, is read as what turns this sensitivity into something useful.
Meena begins at 24° of tropical Pisces and ends at 24° of tropical Aries, so it straddles the point where the tropical year restarts. The gap is the Lahiri ayanamsa, about 24°, by which Jyotish’s sidereal zodiac trails the tropical one. A Western chart’s Aries Moon is most often in Meen Rashi. The Western account is at Moon in Pisces.
The sign lord
Jupiter is the lord of Meena. Dhanu is its other own sign, and its moolatrikona. Jupiter is exalted in Karka and debilitated in Makara.
Meena is the sign of Venus’s exaltation and of Mercury’s debilitation.
Faith, shelter and perspective reach a Meena Moon through Jupiter: placed in Meena, Dhanu or Karka it is read as offering all three, and in Makara as dimming them. Its bhava from the Lagna points the Moon’s receptivity somewhere definite: the 1st toward the self and its outlook, the 9th toward teachers and belief, the 12th toward retreat and the unseen.
Nakshatras in Meen Rashi
Meena opens with a sliver of Purva Bhadrapada: only its fourth pada, 0°00′ to 3°20′, lies inside the sign, and the first three are in Kumbh Rashi. The nakshatra’s lord is Jupiter, the same graha that rules Meena. Aja Ekapada is its deity.
Uttara Bhadrapada comes next in full, from 3°20′ to 16°40′. Saturn is the lord of Uttara Bhadrapada, and its deity is Ahir Budhnya. Revati closes the sign from 16°40′ to 30°00′. Mercury is the lord of Revati, and Pushan is its deity. As the last nakshatra, Revati ends both Meena and the zodiac, and Ashwini begins the circle again with Mesh Rashi.
The Moon’s nakshatra decides which Vimshottari dasha comes first at a birth. Here it is Jupiter’s 16 years from Purva Bhadrapada, Saturn’s 19 from Uttara Bhadrapada or Mercury’s 17 from Revati.
Name letters
A pada passes in hours, so the clock time of birth selects the one syllable that applies. Meena carries nine, in order: Di for the fourth pada of Purva Bhadrapada; Du, Na, Jha and Tha for Uttara Bhadrapada; and De, Do, Cha and Chi for Revati. They are the naming syllables of Govinda’s Piyushadhara commentary on the Muhurta Chintamani, used at Namakarana for the name of a child.
Chi, the ninth, belongs to the fourth pada of Revati, which fills the last 3°20′ of Meena and of the whole zodiac, so the circle of syllables ends where the zodiac does. The syllable is a convention of the naming rite, with no bearing on the temperament or fortune of the person who receives it.
In Prashna
Prashna answers from a chart cast for the minute the question is asked. The Lagna is read as the person asking. The Moon is read as that person’s mind and as the drift of the matter. Her Rashi and nakshatra at that minute are part of what is read.
A Moon in Meena can make a question one about something hidden, unclear or coming to an end, a matter whose facts are not yet all known or a chapter closing; how far that matter can be trusted is read from Jupiter, the sign’s lord, by its sign, bhava and dignity.
Ask AstroGPT in Vedic mode and the minute of the question fixes everything: the app works out the sidereal sky for that time and place, and the matter is read from the picture it makes. The horary astrology guide walks through that kind of reading.
