Physical appearance
Start with what the sources actually say. Lilly gives Sagittarius a countenance he calls well-favoured: a face that is somewhat long yet full and ruddy, almost sunburnt, under light chestnut hair. The stature runs a little above the middle size, and the limbs are well matched in a strong, able body. This is from Christian Astrology (1647).
Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos answers from another angle. It offers no portrait of a Sagittarius Ascendant; it reads physique from the Ascendant, the Moon and their rulers, and sorts the result by quarters of the zodiac. Sagittarius is the last of the three signs counted from Libra, and the type Ptolemy assigns to that quarter is thin and sallow, with good eyes, hair of a moderate curl and a temperament on the cold, dry side. He then mentions Sagittarius by name three more times. It is one of the signs that enlarge the body; one of those he splits in two, giving a slim front half and a sturdy rear; and one of those that lend proportion and grace.
Set beside Lilly’s ruddy face, that gives a large frame, sturdy in the lower body and pleasant to look at. It is imagery, not observation: the two writers lived some fifteen centuries apart and disagree on colouring, and both describe a sign rather than anyone you know.
Temperament and first impression
Sagittarius is mutable fire. Fire is the hot, dry, outgoing element; mutable signs close a season and carry it over into the next, so the sign is read as restless in a useful way, always leaning toward the next place, the next idea, the next conversation. The first impression described for this Ascendant is warmth and openness: someone who says what they think and greets strangers as if they were already half friends.
Candour has its price. A fire sign that speaks before it weighs can promise more than it delivers, and the enthusiasm that wins a room can look like impatience with detail. The manner is easier to like than to hold to a timetable.
Gemini sits opposite, on the Descendant, so the 7th house of partners and open rivals begins in a sign of Mercury. Against the broad, direct self at the centre, the other party is pictured as quick, talkative and more interested in particulars.
The chart ruler
Jupiter governs Sagittarius, and with the sign rising he is the chart ruler. No modern planet shares the sign, so traditional and modern readings follow the same planet. His condition comes first. He is at home in Sagittarius and Pisces and exalted in Cancer, placements where he is read as generous and effective. In Gemini and Virgo he is in detriment and in Capricorn in his fall, where the same breadth of outlook has to work against its surroundings.
His house shows where the weight of the chart falls: in the 1st he stands close to the person, in the 7th he turns the chart toward partners, in the 10th he lifts work and reputation. A Jupiter in his own sign near the Ascendant is about as strong as a chart ruler gets; a Jupiter in Capricorn describes the same open temperament with fewer means to act on it.
Rising sign vs Sun sign
Your Sun sign comes from the date, your rising sign from the hour. Sagittarius rising is possible under any Sun sign, since all twelve signs take a turn on the eastern horizon each day. If the Sun is in Sagittarius as well, the birth was most likely close to sunrise and the two layers pull in the same direction. A Sun in another sign gives a mixed picture: the Sun as the core purpose, Sagittarius as the way it reaches the world.
Neither layer outranks the other. They are read together, the rising sign first because it is the part of the person that others meet. For the emotional layer, the Moon in Sagittarius page covers the same sign in the Moon’s role.
Sagittarius is a sign of long ascension north of the equator. At New York and London it needs well over two hours to rise, and even at the equator a little more than two, as the facts card shows; in the southern hemisphere it speeds up.
In horary: the Ascendant is you
A horary chart belongs to the minute a question is asked, not to a birth. Its Ascendant stands for the querent, the person asking, and the ruler of that Ascendant is the querent’s main significator. When Sagittarius is rising, Jupiter takes that part and the Moon acts as co-significator. The sign can also colour the matter: a Sagittarius Ascendant may describe a querent whose question looks a long way ahead, toward a journey, a course of study or a broad plan.
AstroGPT applies the method directly. It sets its chart for the minute your question arrives, and whichever sign is then climbing in the east represents you for that question; it could be Sagittarius for one question and another sign for the next. The Moon completes the picture, because her path through the rest of her sign shows how the matter develops and what she meets on the way.
With Gemini on the 7th cusp, Mercury signifies the other party. The horary astrology guide builds a judgement from these pieces, and the rising sign calculator gives the sign that rose at your birth.
