Anuradha nakshatra: traits, lord, deity and name letters

The seventeenth nakshatra, ruled by Saturn and set wholly in Vrishchika, the sign where the Moon is debilitated: a lotus, a soft nature and four name syllables.

Anuradha is the seventeenth of the 27 nakshatras and lies entirely within sidereal Vrishchika (Scorpio), from 3°20′ to 16°40′. Saturn is its lord, so a birth with the Moon in Anuradha opens with a 19-year Saturn dasha. Its deity is Mitra, its symbol a lotus, and it belongs to the deva gana and the soft, mridu class.

Character

Anuradha is the seventeenth nakshatra, after Vishakha and before Jyeshtha, and all of it, from 3°20′ to 16°40′, lies in Vrishchika. Mars is the lord of Vrishchika, the sign in which the Moon is debilitated. A Moon in Anuradha is therefore weak by sign, whichever pada it occupies, though it stands in a nakshatra governed by Saturn and belonging to the gentler soft class.

The contrast shapes how the nakshatra is read. A Moon in Anuradha is described as a mind that feels strongly and keeps its feelings from view, loyal in friendship, capable of working in a group and of staying with a difficult task long after others have left it. The lotus fits: a flower rooted in mud that opens clean above the water.

The shadow in the picture is intensity without release. A debilitated Moon in a fixed sign can brood, and Anuradha is read as one that carries obligations and old attachments longer than it needs to. The deva gana tempers this, adding warmth and a wish for harmony.

Lord and dasha

Saturn is the lord of Anuradha, as well as of Pushya and Uttara Bhadrapada, which stand nine places before it and nine after. The three occupy the same stretch of their signs, 3°20′ to 16°40′ of Karka, Vrishchika and Meena, and none of them crosses a boundary.

Of the nine Vimshottari periods Saturn’s, at 19 years, is the second longest, behind only Venus with 20. A birth with the Moon in Anuradha begins in it, and the amount still to run depends on how far across the 13°20′ the Moon had moved. Mercury’s 17 years come after it in the sequence.

A Moon early in the nakshatra leaves most of those 19 years to run, so the first dasha fills childhood and youth. It is read from Saturn in the birth chart: its sign, bhava and dignity.

Deity and symbol

The deity of Anuradha is Mitra. The Brihat Samhita and the Muhurta Chintamani both give the name Mitra.

Its symbol is a lotus. The Muhurta Chintamani gives its shape differently, as an offering of food, with Govinda’s commentary glossing the word as a heap of food presented as a gift. The two images differ in kind: the lotus is a living flower, the offering something handed over, and the readings of the nakshatra draw on each.

Gana, yoni and nature

Anuradha belongs to the deva gana, which Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Shravana and Revati also make up. Gana is the 6-point koota of Ashtakoota matching.

Its yoni is the deer. Under that animal the Muhurta Chintamani couples it with Jyeshtha, which follows it, and B. V. Raman’s Muhurtha names Anuradha the female and Jyeshtha the male. The yoni koota counts for 4.

The nature of Anuradha is mridu, soft, shared with Mrigashira, Chitra and Revati.

Padas and name letters

Under Anuradha the navamsa signs run Simha, Kanya, Tula and Vrishchika, the same run as Chitra’s, and only the last 3°20′ step, which ends the nakshatra at 16°40′, falls in the navamsa of the Rashi’s own sign.

The Moon’s pada at birth decides the name sound, and the kundli calculator will show that pada. Na, Ni, Nu and Ne all begin with N, so only the vowel tells the four padas apart. As part of a naming custom the sound makes no claim about the child.

In Prashna and muhurta

A Moon in Anuradha, weak by sign yet soft by nature, can be read as a question about loyalty, partnership or a duty one is reluctant to drop. Take someone asking whether to stay in a partnership or finish a task that has become wearing. Drawn for the instant it is put, the chart casts that person as its Lagna, while the Moon stands for how they feel about it and where the matter is heading. Mars, lord of Vrishchika, the sign she is always in here, is read beside her.

In muhurta, the Muhurta Chintamani names singing, fresh garments, love-play, jewellery and the affairs of friends for the soft nakshatras, and the Brihat Samhita widens the list to every auspicious undertaking.

In AstroGPT the chart comes from the moment a question is typed and not from a birth date, so the Moon’s place in it is whatever the sky holds at that minute. The horary astrology guide shows how it is judged.

Frequently asked questions

How often is the Moon in Anuradha?
The Moon needs about 27 days to circle the sidereal zodiac, and she moves 12° to 15° a day while Anuradha spans 13°20′, so every visit takes close to a day. She arrives 13 or 14 times in a calendar year. All the passes of 2026 and 2027 are in the dates table on this page.
What are the Anuradha name letters?
Na, Ni, Nu and Ne are the syllables of the four padas. Naming custom picks the one that matches the pada of the birth Moon, and all four begin with N.
Is the Moon weak in Anuradha?
In sign terms yes: Anuradha has no pada outside Vrishchika, and the Moon is debilitated in that sign. That is set against the character of the nakshatra itself, a soft, deva-gana one with Saturn as its lord. In the tropical zodiac it now lies from about 27½° of Scorpio to 11° of Sagittarius.
What is the Anuradha nakshatra lord?
Saturn. Its Vimshottari period of 19 years is the second longest, after Venus with 20. Pushya and Uttara Bhadrapada have the same lord, nine places before and nine places after Anuradha.
