Character
Revati is the twenty-seventh nakshatra and the last stretch of the zodiac, from 16°40′ to 30°00′ of Meena, with Uttara Bhadrapada before it and Ashwini coming next. It lies in one Rashi only, Meen Rashi. Jupiter is the lord of Meena. Mercury is the lord of the nakshatra. Mercury is debilitated in Meena, and Venus is exalted there. A Moon in Revati therefore stands under a nakshatra planet that is debilitated in the sign she occupies, a mix that is read as sensitivity, imagination and an openness that sometimes cannot be sharpened into a decision.
A Moon here is described as gentle, caring and attentive to others, inclined to guide and protect. The mridu, or soft, nature supports that reading, as does the deva gana. This is a mind read as kind, receptive to impressions and happiest when it is looking after something or someone.
The same softness has a less convenient side: a Moon in Revati can be read as vague about boundaries, easily drawn into other people’s concerns and slow to say no. Being last of the 27, Revati can also be read as a nakshatra of completion, where the cycle is brought to a close before it starts over.
Lord and dasha
Mercury is the lord of Revati. Ashlesha and Jyeshtha belong to Mercury as well, each nine places from the next. Vimshottari gives Mercury 17 years of the 120. A birth with the Moon in Revati opens with a Mercury mahadasha, of which only the part not yet run is counted; the Moon’s exact degree fixes how much.
At Revati the dasha cycle and the zodiac close together. When Mercury’s period ends, the sequence moves to Ketu, and Ketu holds Ashwini, the very next nakshatra, which begins the count again.
Once Ketu’s 7 years are over, the later periods run Venus 20 years, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16 and Saturn 19.
Deity and symbol
The deity is Pushan. The Brihat Samhita gives the name as pūṣā, and the Muhurta Chintamani gives pūṣan. Pushan can be read as a guardian figure, and the nakshatra as a protective one.
The symbol is a fish, or a drum. Harness gives both a drum and a fish. The Muhurta Chintamani gives the shape as a drum, in the word mardala, and the same word stands for the shape of Dhanishta, so these two nakshatras share a classical image. A fish can be read as ease of movement through a medium it belongs to, and a drum as a signal that calls people together.
Gana, yoni and nature
Deva, the divine class, is the gana of Revati, and the elephant is its yoni. The Muhurta Chintamani joins Revati to Bharani under the elephant, and B. V. Raman’s Muhurtha makes Revati the female and Bharani the male. In Ashtakoota matching the gana koota is worth 6 points and the yoni koota 4, out of 36 in all.
The nature is mridu, soft, a class that Revati shares with Mrigashira, Chitra and Anuradha. The Muhurta Chintamani gives the soft nakshatras to gentle works: song, new clothes, amorous play, the business of friends and ornaments. The Brihat Samhita adds any auspicious act.
Padas and name letters
The last pada of the last nakshatra ends exactly where the zodiac does, at 30°00′ of Meena, and its navamsa is Meena as well. The four padas, each 3°20′ wide, end at 20°00′, 23°20′, 26°40′ and 30°00′, with the navamsa signs Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha and Meena.
De, Do, Cha and Chi are the syllables, and Namakarana uses the one belonging to whichever pada contained the Moon at birth. Chi, the last, belongs to the final pada of the whole zodiac, so the run of padas closes there and starts over with Ashwini.
In Prashna and muhurta
Because Revati closes the zodiac, a Moon here can be read as a matter reaching its end or coming around to a fresh start, or as a question put by someone who feels more than they have said. The person asking is the Lagna of the chart, and the Moon, the asker’s mind and the way things are moving, stays in Meena throughout this nakshatra, so how Jupiter stands matters for her sign.
For gentle works, muhurta looks to the soft nakshatras, Revati among them.
A question about an ending or a fresh start, put to AstroGPT’s Vedic mode, becomes the moment of a sidereal chart, and the horary astrology guide shows how a Moon in Revati would be weighed in it.
