Physical appearance
In Christian Astrology (1647) Lilly describes Aquarius with two possible builds. One is squat and thick; the other is a strong, well-composed body, not tall. In both the face is long and the complexion sanguine. He then makes the picture depend on the ruler: if Saturn, lord of the sign, is in Capricorn or Aquarius, the hair is black, the complexion sanguine and the teeth crooked, while in other cases he reports a clear, white or fair complexion, sandy or very flaxen hair and a very pure skin.
The sign alone does not settle the look, and Lilly says as much by sending the reader to its ruler: the sign gives a type, and the ruler’s condition adjusts it.
Ptolemy gives no portrait of Aquarius by name. What the Tetrabiblos holds is a single description for the final quarter of the zodiac, the three signs from Capricorn to Pisces, of which Aquarius is the middle one. Bodies formed there are swarthy and middling in height, straight-haired and smooth-skinned, with a somewhat graceful build and a cold, moist temperament. He reads this off the places of the planets that form the body, and the rising sign is only one of those. The sources agree on middling or low stature and disagree on colour and on how graceful the build is.
Temperament and first impression
Aquarius is fixed air. Fixed signs sit in the middle of a season and hold their ground; air is the element of ideas, speech and exchange. The first impression described for this Ascendant is of a person with settled views who delivers them calmly, composed and a little distant: friendly enough, yet seeming to be thinking about something other than you.
Saturn’s rulership shows in a certain caution. A fixed sign under a slow, dry planet is read as keeping its opinions for a long time, and a reserved manner may strike others as aloofness. The better side of the same picture is steadiness: a person who does not need the room’s approval and can hold a long conversation about a principle without raising their voice.
Leo sits on the Descendant. Against a self that is detached and even-handed, the partner or open rival of the 7th house belongs to a sign of fire, and that contrast can be read as the central tension of this rising sign.
The chart ruler
For Aquarius the traditional ruler is Saturn, and he is the chart ruler when the sign rises. Uranus is the sign’s modern co-ruler; it belongs to the modern layer of the reading rather than the foundation. A chart read the old way has one ruler to follow, and a chart read the modern way gets a second to consult.
Saturn’s strength is judged first by sign. He is in his own domicile in Capricorn and Aquarius and exalted in Libra, while Cancer and Leo are his detriment and Aries his fall. Because Aquarius shares Saturn with Capricorn, the two risings have the same chart ruler, and what separates them is the element and the manner of the sign, not the planet.
Next comes his house: in the 1st he sits on the person, in the 7th among partners, in the 10th over public life. Uranus, for a modern reader who wants it, is placed the same way, by house and aspect, as a second voice rather than a replacement.
Rising sign vs Sun sign
The Sun sign records the season of birth, and the rising sign records the hour. Any Sun sign can go with Aquarius rising. If the Sun is in Aquarius too, you were born near sunrise. Otherwise the Sun is read as the core of the person and Aquarius as the approach people meet first.
That is one reason two people with the same Sun sign can seem so different. Neither reading is the truer one; they describe different layers, and the Moon adds a third, covered for this sign on the Moon in Aquarius page.
How quickly Aquarius rises depends on latitude. At New York it clears the horizon in under an hour and a half and at London in little more than an hour, so a birth time rounded to the nearest half hour can easily land in Capricorn or Pisces instead; check a few minutes either side if you were born near a boundary. At Mumbai it needs 1 h 46 min, and only on the equator itself does it come close to the average two hours, with 1 h 59 min; south of the equator it becomes a slow sign.
In horary: the Ascendant is you
Horary turns the Ascendant into the person asking. The chart is set for the minute of the question, the sign rising then is the querent, and its ruler is the querent’s main significator. If Aquarius holds the Ascendant at that minute, Saturn stands for the querent, and the judgement depends on how he meets the ruler of the house of the matter.
AstroGPT does exactly this and nothing else with the Ascendant: the chart is cast for the minute of your question, and the sign rising in that chart represents you in that single question. The sign you were born with does not enter into it.
With Aquarius rising, Leo is on the Descendant, so the Sun signifies the other party. The Moon shows how the matter unfolds, through the next planet she meets. The horary astrology guide explains each step, and to look up the sign you were born with, use the rising sign calculator.
