Physical appearance
The fullest portrait is William Lilly’s. In Book 1 of Christian Astrology (1647) he gives the person with Leo ascending a large, round head, big eyes that start or stare out and are quick-sighted, and a full, large body of more than middle height. The shoulders are broad and the sides narrow, the hair yellow or dark flaxen and much curling or turning up. The face is fierce but ruddy, the complexion high and sanguine, and the whole figure strong, valiant and active.
From Ptolemy we get something less pictorial. Tetrabiblos III.11 forms the body from the quadrant of the zodiac and from the places of the Ascendant, the Moon and their rulers, so Leo appears as part of a group. It belongs with Cancer and Virgo in the quadrant from the summer solstice to the autumn equinox, which he credits with a moderately good complexion, moderate height and robustness, large eyes and thick, curly hair, the temperament exceeding in the warm and dry. Leo he singles out twice: with the signs that enlarge the body, and with those that make the body more robust in its upper and fore parts than in the lower and hind ones.
Set side by side, the two accounts lean the same way, toward size and curl, and the lion imagery nearly writes itself. It is the tradition drawing its sign, an image to reflect on, and it does not tell you how a real person with Leo rising looks.
Temperament and first impression
Leo is a fixed fire sign. Fire gives warmth, enthusiasm and display; fixed gives loyalty, staying power and a dislike of being told to change. On the Ascendant, the result is read as presence: a person who fills a doorway, speaks in complete sentences and seems used to being listened to.
Generosity is the sign’s famous virtue. Leo rising is pictured as quick to host, to praise, to take charge of an awkward gathering and to make others feel included. Its other face is pride. Being ignored or contradicted in public stings more than it might, and a bruised dignity can turn into stubbornness.
Leo can also come across as simpler than it is. What seems like theatre can be sincerity at a high volume, with real loyalty underneath. Seen from northern latitudes Leo is a slow riser, so there is a comfortable window of birth minutes before the Ascendant moves on; the facts card above shows how long at four places, and south of the equator the situation reverses.
The chart ruler
For Leo the chart ruler is the Sun, and there is no modern co-ruler. This is one of two cases, alongside Cancer, where a luminary stands at the head of the chart instead of a planet.
The Sun signifies vitality, authority and the wish to be seen, so its house says where the Leo manner takes up residence. The Sun in the tenth house puts it in public work and reputation. In the first house, the rising sign’s own house, it doubles the effect. In the seventh it is directed to partnerships, and in the fifth to creative play, children and romance. A Sun in Aries, its exaltation, is read as radiating easily; in Libra, its fall, or in Aquarius, its detriment, as having to work for recognition.
The rising sign calculator will show you the Ascendant and the Sun’s place for a birth.
Rising sign vs Sun sign
The two are separate things. The Sun sign is set by the date alone, while the rising sign is the sign on the horizon at the birth minute, which is why people who learned astrology from their birthday are often surprised by their Ascendant.
Take a Leo Ascendant over a gentle, private Sun. The Ascendant is read as what shows first and the Sun as the centre of gravity, so friends might describe a person loud in public and thoughtful alone, though it is really one personality read from two angles.
Where Leo is both Sun and rising sign, what is shown and what is felt line up, and the chart ruler is the Sun of the same sign, as close a match as astrology offers.
For the Lion in the Moon’s place instead, where it shapes feelings and needs rather than manner, see Moon in Leo.
In horary: the Ascendant is you
In horary astrology the question has its own chart. AstroGPT draws one for the minute you ask it, wherever you are, and whichever sign is then climbing over the horizon represents you in the matter. What rose at your birth plays no part.
When Leo is rising, the Sun speaks for you. The astrologer looks at how the Sun connects with the ruler of the house the matter belongs to, then at the Moon, which shows the way things develop as she moves toward her next contact. If the Sun is about to perfect an aspect with that ruler, the matter is read as moving toward the asker; if the aspect has already separated, as drifting away. If you want to see the method worked through, the horary astrology guide has a full chart.
